Citizenship by Naturalization vs Birth in Canada

There are two main ways to become a Canadian citizen: by birth (automatically) or by naturalization (through application).

Citizenship by Birth

If you were born in Canada, you're automatically a citizen (with rare exceptions). If born abroad to a Canadian parent, you may be a citizen by descent. See citizenship by birth.

Citizenship by Naturalization

Permanent residents who meet eligibility requirements (physical presence, language, tax filing) can apply for citizenship. This involves an application, test (ages 18-54), and ceremony.

Are the Rights Different?

No. Citizens by birth and by naturalization have exactly the same rights, privileges, and responsibilities. There is no distinction in Canadian law.
